Grandpa…True Story

When I was 10 years old our family took a trip on a San Francisco Ferry boat ride that cruised around the bay. My little cousins and I were running around the boat playing tag, laughing and smiling when all of sudden I noticed my Grandpa sitting alone looking into the ocean weeping uncontrollably. I stopped to ask my Grandpa, “Grandpa, why are you crying?” He replied (in Korean), “I want to see my family.” With my head cocked sideways with a confused look in my eyes I looked at him and said, “What are you talking about Grandpa we are all on the boat with you?” I almost started gathering the whole family to show him we were all here. Then he explained to me that he doesn’t mean the family that is here now in America but his family he left behind in North Korea.

When my Grandpa was 17 he left his entire family. He escaped climbing mountains and swimming through the ocean so that he and his future family can worship GOD freely. Then he put his hand on my shoulder, looked me straight in the eyes with tears still running down his face and said, “This is why you have to love GOD with all your heart, mind, and soul and also lead your cousins to do the same.” I started crying too and said, “Yes, Grandpa, I understand, I will.”

…”Can I go play now?”
